13-year-old accused of nine sexual assaults facing more charges

A 13-year-old charged with nine counts of sexual assault in Elliot Lake is facing more charges today after allegedly contacting one of the complainants on SnapChat.

The young teen was originally arrested on May 5 after numerous people under the age of 16 told police they were sexually assaulted by the same person.

The 13-year-old was released from custody on the condition that he not contact any of the alleged victims. 

"On May 8, 2023, police were notified that the teen was communicating with one of the previous victims by way of messaging via social media platform Snapchat," says a press release issued today by the East Algoma OPP. "Consequently, the 13-year-old from Elliot Lake was charged with two counts of failure to comply with undertaking."

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

On May 10, 2023, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested the teen again in relation to breaching previous release conditions. This was a result of an ongoing sexual assault investigation in Elliot Lake.

In April 2023, the OPP received numerous sexual assault related complaints from multiple victims. All of the complainants reported being sexually assaulted by the same person. As a result, the teen was arrested and charged on May 5, 2023.

On May 8, 2023, police were notified that the teen was communicating with one of the previous victims by way of messaging via social media platform Snapchat. Consequently, the 13-year-old from Elliot Lake was charged with two counts of failure to comply with undertaking.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on May 10, 2023.
