Work has started at the site of what will be the first Popeyes chicken in Timmins.

Two years after a new fried chicken joint was given the go-ahead, work has started at the site.

Popeyes Lousiana Kitchen is going in at the Morris A. Feldman Development at the intersection of Algonquin Boulevard and Highway 655.

Popeyes will be on the Shoppers side of the development in the north end of the parking lot near Algonquin.

The company says the location is tentatively scheduled to open in early 2023.

The development was approved back in July 2020, when Timmins council also have the green light to the new Timmins LCBO location that opened earlier this year.

There's been a flurry of activity at the development recently in that area. Along with the new fast-food joint, Starbucks is rumoured to be opening there as well. TimminsToday reached out to Starbucks. While they didn't confirm the new location, they said they would provide an update when more is known. In that area, Tisdale Mechanical Contracting and Grainger also recently relocated to the former Acklands building.

With extra traffic at the intersection, some councillors have been pushing for improved traffic lights to accommodate the volume of vehicles.
