VIDEO: Inspector signs off final shift with OPP

A change of command ceremony next week will see Foy sworn in as Timmins Police chief

After 27 years of service with the OPP, Insp. Dan Foy has signed off for his final shift.

Sitting in a black and white cruiser, Foy listened to the dispatcher and his colleagues wish him well in his retirement from the OPP, where he was the James Bay detachment commander. OPP shared the video on its social media channels yesterday.

Next week, Foy will be sworn in as the new Timmins Police Service chief.

In the video, the dispatcher announces that Foy is signing off for his last shift after almost 27 years of dedicated service.

“Insp. Foy, thank you for your service not only to the public and the communities you’ve served, but also for your unwavering support in your role as detachment commander, critical incident commander and area crime supervisor. Our members will be forever grateful to you. I am honoured to have worked with you for the past 16 years and to call you a friend,” said the dispatcher.

Images of Foy throughout his policing career, from him as a young constable to snapshots of him throughout the region, were also shared in the video.

“It’s been an honour and I appreciate the kind words. Everyone be safe and look after each other,” said Foy before other officers can be heard on the radio to congratulate him.

In November 2021, Foy was named as the successor to retiring Timmins Police Chief John Gauthier.

Before taking over as the James Bay commander, he was the South Porcupine OPP detachment commander. He started with the OPP in Chapleau in 1995.

The Timmins Police change of command ceremony takes place next Thursday, Feb. 24.
