Timmins top cop has announced his retirement.

After nearly 11 years as chief of Timmins Police, John Gauthier's resignation letter was accepted by the police services board this week.

"In the months to come, the board will be tasked with identifying a suitable replacement which will not be an easy chore given the commitment displayed by the outgoing chief," said Marc Depatie, Timmins Police corporate communications co-ordinator.

Gauthier took over as chief in July 2011. His last day is Feb. 28, 2022.

Born and raised in Timmins, he had a career in mining prior to pursuing his passion for law enforcement.

"His work ethic, dedication and thoroughness led him to a series of promotions within the Timmins Police Service. His management style was focused on community wellness, open communication, and officer safety," said Depatie.

"He admits that it is time for a fresh perspective to guide the Timmins Police through the times ahead. It is noteworthy that he has remained committed to having his officers provide first rate service to the citizens and guests to the city of Timmins despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.  He continued to be dedicated to ensuring and promoting as safe and modern a work environment as fiscally possible."

In retirement, Gauthier hopes to focus on home improvements and spending time with family.

"In his typical style, he has volunteered his service to the board at any time that his wealth of experience can prove to be beneficial," said Depatie.

"Nonetheless, Chief John Gauthier will be missed and remembered for his sense of humour, balanced with a fierce devotion to his community."
