With more businesses opening at the intersection of Algonquin and Highway 655, a councillor is looking to speed up a report on the lights to safely accommodate the extra traffic.

A Timmins councillor is looking to speed up a report on the traffic lights at the corner of Highway 655 and Algonquin.

Tuesday (May 10), the new centralized LCBO is opening at the Morris A Feldman Developments at the corner of Algonquin Boulevard and Highway 655. The new state-of-art store means the existing locations in South Porcupine and Timmins are closing.

At the plaza, Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen is slated to open by year-end and a Starbucks is rumoured to be opening there as well. TimminsToday reached out to Starbucks. While they didn't confirm the new location, they said they would provide an update when more is known. In that area, Tisdale Mechanical Contracting and Grainger also recently relocated to the former Acklands building.

"There’s a whole series of businesses that are located there and unfortunately our traffic light system will not accommodate what we have there,” said Coun. John Curley at the May 3 council meeting.

He asked city staff for a report sooner rather than later on the traffic lights.

Right now at the intersection, there is an advanced green for southbound traffic turning off of 655 onto Algonquin, and for eastbound traffic.

Curley is especially concerned about drivers turning left out of the development, saying there are no safe left-hand turns.

“The residents of Timmins will definitely be affected to try and exit out of that intersection safely with that much traffic that’s going to be at that intersection now,” he said.
