Backyard fires will be permitted in Timmins for May Run.

Earlier today, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry announced the provincial restricted fire zone is being lifted May 16 at 12:01 a.m.

On Facebook, the Timmins Firefighters confirmed the ban is also being lifted in the City of Timmins.

There is no burning today (Friday, May 15, 2020).

Starting May 16, if you have a burning permit, the burning hours run from 7 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.

Valid permits for 2019 will be extended and valid until July 1, 2020.

"The main station at 133 Cedar Street South is still under restricted access so you can not show up to get a permit. If you show up at the door for a permit you will be turned away," reads the post.

"If you require a permit you can call 705-360-2626 and do it over the phone. Please keep in mind that we issue thousands of permits a year and the telephone will be busy. Payment will be arranged later next week."

The rules for burning they listed are that you:

• own the property you are burning on

• have an approved chiminea

• have 10 feet around the appliance in all directions

• the appliance is not on a deck

• if you rent, a letter from your landlord saying you are approved to burn with the address and signature

• do not burn pressure treated lumber or garbage

• the wood must be dry and clean

• have not had your permit revoked for not following the rules

They are also reminding people to respect the COVID-19 physical distancing rules.
