George Pirie is the PC candidate for the Ontario election in June 2022.

Timmins Mayor George Pirie is reaffirming his commitment to the city in the wake of the announcement that he's seeking a provincial seat.

Last night, Pirie was nominated as the Progressive Conservative candidate for Timmins in the June 2022 provincial election.

“I want to take this opportunity to reaffirm my commitment as the Mayor of the City of Timmins. I was voted in by the residents of the city to represent them and I will continue to do this job as my first priority,” said Pirie in a statement released from the mayor's office today.

“Running in the next provincial election is my next step to better the City of Timmins and surrounding communities. I truly believe in the possibilities of Northern Ontario and I will continue to pursue these endeavours at a higher level should I be successful in my candidacy.”

The riding has been held by NDP Gilles Bisson since 1990.

A sitting member of council is able to run for higher office, either provincially or federally. If elected, they have to resign their municipal seat.
