A number of Indigenous community-led projects in the region have been boosted by the province.

This week, Minister of Indigenous Affairs Greg Rickford announced the recipients of the Indigenous Economic Development Fund.

According to a news release, it's "part of the government's commitment to support Indigenous economic development by supporting community-led projects."

Projects in the region receiving support from the Indigenous Economic Development Fund are:

  • Fort Albany First Nation - $100,000 for the Fort Albany Small Business Development Project
  • Moose Cree First Nation - $100,000 for Our Store, The Moose Cree Food Co-operative
  • Chapleau Cree First Nation - $50,000 for a multi-purpose community centre feasibility study

Aboriginal financial institutions are also receiving support. In 2019-2020, the Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund will receive $700,000.

The government expects additional recipients will be announced in the coming months.

For groups interested in applying for IEDF cash, the next application intake will likely be launched in the spring here.
