It's the first long weekend of the year! 

There are plenty of events being offered to keep everyone busy on Family Day Monday, Feb. 18. 

Here are some of the events happening in Timmins:

Free Family Fishing Derby

The Timmins Fur Council is hosting its annual event on Porcupine Lake. It’s open to kids 16 years and under. All equipment will be provided, and there will be free snacks and prizes. There are one-hour slots available, with them starting at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, and 1 p.m. Spaces are limited. To register, email Kaileigh Russell at [email protected].

Cheer on the Rock

The Timmins Rock are taking on the Hearst Lumberjacks at the McIntyre Arena. The puck drops at 3 p.m. You can buy tickets ahead of time at timminsrock.com.

Learn to curl

The McIntyre Curling Club is having an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Clean indoor shoes and helmets are required. For more information, call 705-360-1770 or email [email protected].

Free skating!

Grab your skates and head out to Archie Dillon Sportsplex. OPSEU is sponsoring a free public skate from 11 a.m. to noon

Take a dip

OPSEU is also sponsoring a free swim at the Sportsplex from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Hit the trails

Porcupine Ski Runners is offering half-price day fees and equipment rental from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a four-hour time limit on rentals.

Science Olympics

Science Timmins is delivering fun for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person. Spaces are limited, to reserve a spot call 705-268-4543. The schedule is: 10 a.m. structure challenge; 11 a.m. robotics challenge; noon, co-ordination challenge; 1 p.m., planets and stars and planetarium presentation.
