A portion of Algonquin Boulevard will be closed to traffic Tuesday afternoon to allow for a flag raising for Le Jour des Franco-Ontariens and Franco-Ontariennes.

Sept. 25, Algonquin will be closed from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. between Pine and Balsam streets.

“The purpose of the road closure is to facilitate members of the community and a large number of local primary and high school students to attend at City Hall for a special ceremony honouring the francophone community,” said traffic Sgt. Tom Chypyha in a news release. “The Traffic Section at the Timmins Police Service appreciates the anticipated cooperation of local motorists in regards to this traffic closure.”

Council approved the road closure request from le Centre culturel La Ronde at its Sept. 11 meeting.

In a letter, the organization said about 400 students and faculty from French schools in the area, as well as other francophones are expected to attend the event. The flag raising is schedule to take place at 1:30 p.m.

The commercial vehicle detours are:

  • Westbound vehicles will be expected to take Highway 655 to Laforest Road and follow the Detour D2 signs in place for the Kraft Creek bridge construction
  • Eastbound traffic can exit Algonquin Boulevard at Theriault Boulevard and follow the Detour D2 signs
