Work continues to move forward on the section of Algonquin Boulevard being rebuilt this year, according to the City of Timmins.

The 2022 Connecting Link work affects the main road through Timmins between Mountjoy Street and Theriault Boulevard.

So far, the City of Timmins says the watermain work from Theriault to Rea Street is done.

After a delay in getting started, construction work began mid-June. The work planned for this year includes replacing the water, sanitary and storm infrastructure, new curbs and sidewalks, and new asphalt and light standards.

Drivers are encouraged to use the designated detour routes.

"City contractors will be adding additional detour signs along the southerly route, flashing beacons at all temporary stop signs, and signage indicating a four-way stop or all-way stop is ahead. Line painting crews are also scheduled this week to add stop lines and crosswalk markings for temporary stops," said the city in a news release.

The detour to the north of Algonquin is Theriault Boulevard, Vimy Avenue and Mountjoy Street North. There is a temporary four-way stop at Theriault and Vimy and a temporary three-way stop at Vimy and Mountjoy.

The south detour is Cameron Street, Commercial Avenue and Mountjoy Street South. There are temporary traffic lights at Cameron and Wilson, and Commercial and Mountjoy.

The detour for heavy truck traffic is the same as last year.

It includes Shirley Street, Lafleur Drive, Laforest and Highway 655.

New this year, there will be a temporary speed limit drop to 50 km/h on Airport Road just south of Laforest in the Kraft Creek bridge area.
