Key Connecting Link detour intersections are being monitored by police.

A traffic advisory about drivers disobeying signs on the detours  was issued today by Timmins Police.

On Monday,  a section of Algonquin Boulevard — the main road through the city — was closed to allow crews to reconstruct a half-kilometre stretch of the road.

The City of Timmins set up two detours around this year's work.

Police are experiencing "traffic issues" on the detour north of Algonquin, particularly at the intersection of Vimy and Theriault where there is a temporary four-way stop, and at Vimy and Mountjoy Street that has a temporary three-way stop.

"Congestion along the detour route is worsened by those drivers who are not following the appropriately posted detour signage clearly indicating that left turns are prohibited for the time being," said police in a news release.

"These intersections along with other key locations that fall within the detour are being monitored by the Timmins Police Service."

People not following the posted signs can "expect a firm but fair response" from police.

The detour to the south of Algonquin is Cameron Street, Commercial Avenue and Mountjoy Street South. There will be temporary traffic lights at Cameron and Wilson, and Commercial and Mountjoy.

For heavy truck traffic, the detour is the same as last year.

It includes Shirley Street, Lafleur Drive, Laforest and Highway 655.

New this year, there will be a temporary speed limit drop to 50 km/h on Airport Road just south of Laforest in the Kraft Creek bridge area.
