Five forest fires active in the northeast

The fire hazard ranges from low to extreme across the region, says MNRF

There are five active forest fires in the northeast region.

According to the Ontario Forest Fire map, the active fires are:

• Sudbury 22 is under control at 1.7 hectares. It's lcoated along the French River.

• Sudbury 21 is under control at two hectares and is located along Lake Panache.

• Wawa 4, which is east of Dreany Lake, is being held at 7.4 hectares.

• Kirkland Lake 1 is being observed at 15.8 hectares. It's about two kilometres north of Belle Vallée.

• Cochrane 2 is being held at one hectare. It's located south of Chabbie Lake.

The overall number of forest fires in the province is up slightly from 2019.

To date, there have been 148 fires in Ontario this year, compared to 138 at this point last year. The 10-year average is 281.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports the fire hazard ranging from low to extreme in the northeastern Ontario region. The highest hazard is in the central and southern portions.
