The City of Timmins and the union representing airport staff are sitting down this morning for mediation.

The Union of Canadian Transportation Employees gave its 72-hour strike notice over the weekend, with it being effective today (March 4) at 6 p.m.

Ahead of the job action, a mediator has ordered the two parties back to the bargaining table.

The 19 members of the union at the Victor M. Power Airport have been without a contract for about two years. They voted in favour of taking job action last week.

An update from the City of Timmins today said the strike notice was received by fax after the close of the work day March 1.

"The City's last offer to the union was delivered on Feb. 6. The union flatly refused that offer and has not provided a counter offer since that time. It is hoped that this meeting will help move all parties towards agreement," reads the statement.

"Travellers may expect some delays in the event of the establishment of a picket line, and should factor that into their preparation for flights. The City of Timmins will continue to provide safe and relivable airport operations in the event of a labour disruption."

In a statement from the union yesterday, it said the "members fully expect to go on strike at 6 p.m. on Monday unless a final deal is reached."

TimminsToday will post updates on the negotiations as they become available.
