The flags at all municipally-owned facilities will be flying at half-mast on Sunday, Sept. 13 in recognition and support of the Firefighters’ National Memorial Day.

Established by the Government of Canada in 2017, the second Sunday of September each year serves as tribute to public safety officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

“It’s important to recognize that we are not only honouring those who have lost their lives, but those who continue to dedicate themselves to this noble career,” said Mayor George Pirie. “Our community is extremely fortunate to have a large numbers of highly skilled, dedicated and brave professionals and volunteers committed to keeping us safe.”

According to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF), more than 1,600 firefighters have died on duty since 1848.
