Updates on the proposed aquatic centre, and Stars and Thunder will be at the next Timmins council meeting.

While there are no reports attached to the items, the July 10 agenda lists a final detailed design for the aquatics/multi-use recreation centre as a delegation from Perkins and Will.

The Stars and Thunder spreadsheet will be presented by CAO Dave Landers.

The second edition of the eight-day Stars and Thunder music festival and international fireworks competition wrapped up on Canada Day with a concert from Canadian rocker Bryan Adams.

The number of people in the crowd appeared to grow throughout the week, however there hasn’t been an official update on ticket sales from the city yet.

For the aquatic centre, Perkins and Will were in town over the winter for public meetings to allow the public to have input on the design elements and programming at the potential multi-use recreation centre.

At that time, the plans included a pool area with an eight-lane competition pool, leisure/therapy hot pool, and a family-friendly play zone. There is also a dryland section with multi-use and squash courts, and an indoor walking track.

Council has approved the schematic design for the facility, which included an estimated $36.6 million construction cost. According to Perkins and Will’s presentation to council earlier this year, the total project costs could be $48 million, which includes a 15 per cent construction contingency and other soft costs.

Approval of the schematic design allowed staff to move ahead with work on the second phase of the three-phase process.

According to a staff report at the time, the second phase is the detailed design and development, which will include more accurate costing for the project and its ongoing costs.

Timmins council meets at 6 p.m. July 10 in council chambers. You can look at the full agenda here
