The intersection of Theriault Boulevard and Algonquin will be closed starting Monday, Aug. 23.

A busy Timmins intersection will be temporarily closed for construction starting next week.

Monday, Aug. 23 the road closure on Algonquin Boulevard will be extended to include the Theriault Boulevard intersection.

The detour for local traffic, including cyclists, is Wilson Avenue. The temporary traffic signals at the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Cameron Street are being reprogrammed to maximize the flow of traffic, according to the City of Timmins.

The heavy truck traffic detour is on Airport and Laforest Road.

“We’re pleased with how construction has been progressing this summer and happy to move into the final phase before the end of August,” said Ken Krcel, project manager, in a news release.

“We’ve left closure of the Theriault intersection for as long as possible to aid traffic flow. We understand that this will cause more delays as we head into the school season with a number of schools located along Theriault Boulevard and will continue to monitor traffic to help ease congestion. We appreciate everyone’s patience and look forward to completing this project.”

Work on the section of the Connecting Link being replaced this year started in April.

The $7.2-million project includes a full reconstruction of water, sanitary and storm infrastructure, new curbs and sidewalk, new asphalt and new light standards on Algonquin Boulevard from the bridge to Theriault Boulevard.

The city received $3 million from the province for the project.

In Timmins, the Connecting Link is a 21.35-kilometre stretch of Highway 101 running from Kamiskotia Road in the west to the old railway tracks in Porcupine.

Since 2016 more than $19 million of roadwork has been done on about five kilometres from the top of Rae Hill to Legion Drive.
