4 new COVID-19 cases reported, high-risk exposure advisory issued for Living Space

The exposure is for staff and guests of the homeless shelter Thursday, April 22 to Thursday, April 29

Four new COVID-19 cases are being reported today by the Porcupine Health Unit. 

A high-risk exposure advisory has also been issued for Timmins' homeless shelter. 

Three of the new cases are in Timmins and one is in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls. Three people are the contact of a case one the exposure of one is under investigation, according to the health unit. All of the people are in self-isolation.

The high-risk exposure advisory is for Living Space Timmins, where an outbreak was declared earlier this week. 

The exposure is for staff and guests at the Cedar Street North facility Thursday, April 22 to Thursday, April 29.

Anyone experiencing symptoms should self-isolate immediately and call their local assessment centre.

Typical COVID-19 symptoms are:

  • fever
  • new or worsening cough
  • shortness of breath 
  • loss of sense of smell or taste 
  • sore throat or hoarse voice 
  • difficulty swallowing 
  • runny nose or nasal congestion 
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain 

Atypical symptoms are:

  • unexplained fatigue or malaise 
  • muscle aches
  • delirium
  • unexplained or increased number of falls 
  • acute functional decline 
  • exacerbation of current chronic conditions 
  • chills 
  • headaches 
  • croup 
  • conjuctivitis

To date, there have been 631 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. As of yesterday, 468 are recovered and 26 people have died. While the health unit reports new cases on the weekend, the number of people who have recovered is not updated.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.
