29 new cases, 45 recoveries reported today

Editor's Note: The health unit reported five additional cases this evening, bringing the total number of cases reported today to 34.

The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting 29 new COVID-19 cases and 45 recoveries today, 

Eighteen new cases are in Timmins, nine are in the James Bay area, and two people are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls.

Ten people are the contacts of a case and the exposure of 19 is under investigation, according to the health unit. 

A potential COVID-19 exposure advisory has been issued for a Timmins flight. 

The travel advisory is for the Wednesday, May 19 Air Canada flight AC8283 scheduled to leave from Toronto to Timmins at 8:30 a.m.

It is especially for passengers who sat in rows seven to 11, who must self-isolate immediately and call their local health unit. Other people are advised to self-monitor.

In the Porcupine Health Unit region,1,201 confirmed cases of the virus since the start of the pandemic. Of those, 854 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are a record 311 known active cases — 173 in Timmins, 77 in the James Bay region, 48 in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, four in the Kapuskasing area, six in Hearst, Hornepayne, and three out of region. 

So far, 42,030 people in the region have been vaccinated, which is an increase of 342 since the last report. There have been 48,340 doses of the vaccine administered.

The Porcupine Health Unit continues to have the highest weekly case rate in Ontario. 

The weekly case rate (from May 16 to May 22) for the Porcupine Health Unit is 297.2 cases per 100,000 population. Peel Region’s rate is 176.1 cases per 100,000 population for the same time period. Toronto Public Health’s rate is 106.5 cases per 100,000 people.

Public Health Ontario provides a breakdown of the cases, age range, and hospitalizations over the past 14 days, with a three-day lag from the time of data extraction.

The breakdown for recent cases in the Porcupine Health Unit region as of May 26 is:

  • Zero to nine years, 53 cases. No hospitalizations. 
  • 10 to 19 years, 49 cases. One hospitalization.
  • 20 to 29 years, 100 cases. One hospitalization. 
  • 30 to 39 years, 83 cases. Four hospitalizations.
  • 40 to 49 years, 51 cases. Four hospitalizations.
  • 50 to 59 years, 38 cases. Five hospitalizations.
  • 60 to 69 years, 19 cases. One hospitalization.
  • 70 to 79 years, 6 cases. No hospitalizations.
  • 80 to 89 years, 4 cases. No hospitalizations. 
  • 90 plus years, 2 case. No hospitalizations.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.
