$254K to help friendship centre with upgrades

Projects in Iroquois Falls, Moosonee, Matachewan and Hearst are also receiving joint funding from the federal, provincial governments

The Timmins Native Friendship Centre is receiving money to allow for upgrades.

The joint provincial and federal funding is through the COVID-19 Resilience Stream (CVRIS) of the Investing in Canada program.

Five projects in the region are receiving cash.

The Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres and the Timmins Native Friendship Centre are receiving $318,187 for a Timmins Alternative Secondary School Program project. It includes $254,550 from the federal government and $63,637 from the province. It will allow for upgrades to the Timmins Native Friendship Centre, which is the alternate secondary school program delivery site in Timmins.

It will see six new energy-efficient boilers installed, as well as a new dishwasher, kitchen sink and eye washing stations.

The Town of Iroquois Falls is receiving $100,000 — $80,000 from the federal government and $20,000 from the province — to make the town hall building more accessible by installing a ramp and automatic doors.

"Once complete, this project will provide an accessible town hall building to improve customer service and will ensure that every person can enjoy events, activities, and services without barriers," reads the announcement.

In Matachewan, municipal buildings are being upgraded with its $100,000 investment, which includes $80,000 from the federal government and $20,000 from the province. The work includes installing new HVAC systems in the fire station, gym and nursing station, as well as renovations to offices to expand council chambers.

The Town of Moosonee is also receiving $100,000 to upgrade the municipal recreation centre. New air conditioning units are being installs and a new barrier-free automated sanitizing washrooms are being built.

There's also $50,000 for HVAC repairs and upgrades for Foyer Des Pionniers in Hearst.

"This project will replace the existing HVAC system controlling the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning in the dining room and living areas in wings A and B of the home. Once completed, the project will help improve the efficiency and control of the HVAC system and provide more comfortable temperatures and acceptable indoor air quality for residents and staff," according to the announcement.
