Heading into the long weekend, Timmins Mayor George Pirie is encouraging people to prepare and do your shopping early.

“As we head into the long weekend, as businesses open up, I’m extremely confident in the City of Timmins, the residents of the City of Timmins, that we will do the right thing the right way,” he said in today's daily health table for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bylaw officers have been visiting businesses that are re-opening, and he said everyone's co-operating.

There have been no new confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in the area in the past 24 hours.

So far, there have been 65 cases locally. Of those, 49 are resolved and five people have died.

With nice weather and stores re-opening, Porcupine Health Unit chief nursing officer Chantal Riopel said it's very important for people to continue limiting their outings.

One person per family should go out for essential items when possible and people should respect physical distancing when outside the home. Everyone is reminded to also wash their hands well and often.

“It’s important to maintain these. We are headed in the right direction, the public health measures are making a difference, people are making a difference, and we want to continue this way,” she said.

If you are out and spot any sharps or needles in the community, Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board (CDSSAB) CAO Brian Marks said to call Living Space at 705-531-7233 and someone will pick it up.

Living Space is also sponsoring a virtual community cleanup until May 31.

“While people are out enjoying the outdoors with those in your household, you can enter the contest by posting a photo of you and your immediate family with the garbage that you’ve collected. Tag Living Space in your post and tag three family members or friends and have them continue the cleanup,” said Marks.

The prize is an Acres of Dreams barbecue box and an Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins good food box. The community clean up challenge winner will be announced June 1. More details are available on the Living Space Facebook page.
