Three new COVID-19 cases are being reported by the Timiskaming Health Unit.

An outbreak has also been declared at Extendicare Tri-Town in Haileybury. All the cases are linked to the outbreak, according to the health unit.

The cause of the cases is under investigation and the people are in self-isolation.

The announcement of these cases comes a day after the health unit announce they had no active cases for the first time since early December 2020.

“We are announcing an outbreak with three new cases today. Although we declared yesterday that our district had zero active COVID-19 cases, we know how quickly the situation can change,” said Dr. Glenn Corneil, THU acting medical officer of health and CEO, in a news release.

“We are working with partners to make sure that all precautions are in place for resident and staff safety.”

Since the start of the pandemic there have been 89 cases in the district. Of those, 85 are recovered and one person has died.

In the Timiskaming region, there are assessment centres in the areas of Temiskaming Shores, Englehart, Kirkland Lake, and Temagami. Testing is by appointment only.

The health unit's COVID-19 line phone number is 705-647-4305 ext. 7 or 1-866-747-4305 ext. 7. It is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to noon.
