Ontario reports 945 new COVID cases, lowest since October

The province has also reported 1,344 new recoveries, 18 deaths, and 41 new hospitalizations

Public Health Ontario has reported 945 new cases of COVID-19 today (Feb. 11), which is the lowest daily report since Oct. 30.

However, today's update notes Toronto Public Health case counts are under-reported today. 

Today's report includes 1,344 new recoveries and 18 new deaths, nine were residents at long-term care homes.

The deaths reported today include two people between 40 and 59 years old, seven people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and nine people over the age of 80.

The province has reported 41 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and six new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The Feb. 10 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 12,853 active cases, which is down from 13,270 yesterday
  • 883 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 948 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 299 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 313) and 211 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 226 yesterday).
  • The province reported 68,812 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 2.3 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 43,383 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 10 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 945 new cases reported today, 112 are from Toronto, 258 cases are from Peel, 116 are from York Region, and 34 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • There are 208 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 109 at retirement homes and 59 at hospitals. 
  • Of the cases reported today there are 135 people under 19 years old, 390 people between 20 and 39 years old, 238 people between 40 and 59 years old, 130 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 51 people over the age of 80. 

Variant of concern

  • The province has reported 236 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • The province has reported three cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccine update for Feb. 10:

  • There were 14,717 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on Feb 10, up from 13,486 on Feb. 9.
  • As of 8 p.m. on Feb. 10, the province reported 426,836 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 136,988 people have been fully vaccinated, having received two doses of vaccine, which are to be given a few weeks apart.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 282,511 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 263,044 recoveries and 6,614 deaths, of which 3,769 were individuals living in long-term care homes.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,900.6 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 62.8 cases per 100,000 people from Feb. 1 to Feb. 7, which is a decrease of 22 per cent compared to Jan. 26 to Feb. 1 when the average weekly incidence rate was 84.1 cases per 100,000 people.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 189 cases, rate of 165.2 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 187 cases. There are 21 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 15.7 cases per 100,000.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 216 cases, rate of 166.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 219 cases. There are 22 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 14.6 cases per 100,000.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 302 cases, rate of 361.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 301 cases. There are 32 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 22.8 cases per 100,000.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 565 cases, rate of 283.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 546 cases. There are 27 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 13.6 cases per 100,000. There are 3 confirmed variants of concern (VOC) cases, both are the UK (B.1.1.7) strain.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 91 cases, rate of 278.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 92 cases. There is one known active case. The weekly incidence rate is 6.1 cases per 100,000. The health unit has administered 329 vaccine doses.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 282 cases, rate of 321.6 per 100,000 people. There are 14 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 18.2 cases per 100,000.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 1,081 cases, rate of 720.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,104 cases. There are 106 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is52 cases per 100,000.
