Ontario reports 340 new cases of COVID-19 today

Public Health Ontario also reported 23 deaths and 340 recoveries in its daily update

Public Health Ontario has reported an increase of 340 (1.5 per cent) of lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases today.

The provincial agency’s daily update also includes 23 deaths related to the coronavirus and another 340 reported recoveries.

Of the 23 deaths reported today, one person was between the ages of 40 and 59, nine people were between the ages of 60 and 79, and 13 people were over the age of 80.

There are now 934 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 171 patients in intensive care, and 129 on ventilators.

According to today’s update, there were 16,217 tests processed on Friday, and there remains a backlog of 4,414 tests awaiting results. The province has completed 544,826 COVID-19 tests since the beginning of the pandemic.

In total, Public Health Ontario has reported 22,653 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province, and of those 17,360 people have recovered (76.6 per cent), and 1,881 people have died (8.3 per cent).

The Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care is reporting 189 long-term care homes in outbreak, and 82 with resolved outbreaks. There are 2,500 confirmed active cases in long-term care residents, and 1,631 active cases of positive staff. The ministry has reported 1,388 deaths of long-term care home residents, and five deaths of staff associated with COVID-19. Public Health Ontario has reported 867 long-term care resident deaths.

Public Health Ontario reports 77 hospital outbreaks and 114 retirement home outbreaks.

The Porcupine Health Unit has confirmed 65 cases since the start of the pandemic. Of those, 53 are resolved and six people have died.

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases, with 79. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population among other health units in Northern Ontario. The rate there is 77.9 per 100,000 people.

According to today's report, which includes data from Jan. 15 to May 16, the number of cases at other Northern Ontario health units, as well as the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population are:

• Algoma Public Health - 18 cases, rate of 15.7 per 100,000 population

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 20 cases, rate of 15.4 per 100,000 population

• Porcupine Health Unit - 65, rate of 77.9 per 100,000 population

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 63 cases, rate of 31.7 per 100,000 population

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 79 cases, rate of 52.7 per 100,000 population

• Northwestern Health Unit - 19 cases, rate of 21.7 per 100,000 population

According to the report, in Northeastern Ontario, there have been 184 confirmed cases, and the rate is 32.9 per 100,000 population. In Northwestern Ontario, there have been 98 cases and a rate of 41.2. The provincial rate per 100,000 population is 152.4
