Ontario reports 304 new cases of COVID-19 today

Public Health Ontario has reported 304 new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 today, which is a 1.3 per cent increase in the total number of provincial cases.

The agency is also reporting 278 recoveries and 23 deaths in today’s update.

The deaths reported today include one person between the age of 40 and 59, 11 people between the ages of 60 and 79 and 11 people over the age of 80.

The province is reporting another 9,155 test results processed with 2,189 awaiting results. This brings the total number of tests completed in the province to-date to 553,981.

There are now 972 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 174 patients in intensive care and 133 on ventilators.

Public Health Ontario has reported 22,957 lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, and of those, 17,638 people have recovered (76.8 per cent), and 1,904 people have died (8.3 per cent).

The Ministry of Long-Term Care has confirmed 189 outbreaks at long-term care homes with 2,526 confirmed cases in residents, 1,606 confirmed cases in staff, 1,389 deaths of residents and five staff deaths.

The ministry also reports there have been 85 outbreaks resolved in long-term care homes since the start of the pandemic.

Public Health Ontario is reporting 276 outbreaks at long-term care homes, 114 at retirement homes and 77 at hospitals. All of those totals are cumulative and include outbreaks that have been resolved. The province’s public health agency has reported 910 deaths of residents in long-term care, 159 deaths of residents at retirement homes, and 52 hospital patient deaths related to outbreaks.

The Porcupine Health Unit has had 65 confirmed cases. Of those, 53 are resolved and six people have died.

It has been a week since the last positive test was reported locally.

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases, with 79. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population among other health units in Northern Ontario. The rate there is 77.9 per 100,000 people.

According to today's report, which includes data from Jan. 15 to May 17, the number of cases at other Northern Ontario health units, as well as the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population are:

• Algoma Public Health - 20 cases, rate of 17.5 per 100,000 population

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 20 cases, rate of 15.4 per 100,000 population

• Porcupine Health Unit - 65, rate of 77.9 per 100,000 population

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 63 cases, rate of 31.7 per 100,000 population

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 79 cases, rate of 52.7 per 100,000 population

• Northwestern Health Unit - 19 cases, rate of 21.7 per 100,000 population

According to the report, in Northeastern Ontario, there have been 186 confirmed cases, and the rate is 33.3 per 100,000 population. In Northwestern Ontario, there have been 98 cases and a rate of 41.2. The provincial rate per 100,000 population is 154.4.
