Ontario reported record 1,983 new COVID cases today

The province also confirmed 35 deaths in its latest update

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,983 new cases of COVID-19 today, which is the highest number of cases ever reported in a day. 

The last record number of cases was reported on Monday, Dec. 7 with 1,925 new cases.

Due to technical issues, the province hasn't included new hospitalizations in today's report

The latest update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following: 

  • 35 deaths reported, including one person between 40 and 59 years old, five people between 60 and 79 years old, and 28 people over the age of 80. Of the deaths reported today, 24 were residents of long-term care homes.
  • 1,804 new recoveries 
  • 139 new school-related cases
  • 10 schools in the province are currently closed because of COVID-19 cases and 878 Ontario schools have one or more confirmed case of COVID-19 reported
  • Of the 1,983 cases reported today, 515 are from Peel, 496 are from Toronto, and 208 are from York Region
  • 16,233 current active cases in Ontario
  • 61,809 tests complete since last report, producing a 3.6 per cent positivity rate (the lowest since Dec. 5)
  • 829 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 811 yesterday
  • There are 228 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 221 yesterday) and 132 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 129 yesterday)

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 134,783 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 114,679 of those recovered and 3,871 deaths. 

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 906.7 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 85.1 cases per 100,000 people from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6. 

The province announced this morning it is extending its emergency orders related to COVID-19 prevention and control measures to Jan. 20.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data for the rate of cases for the health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 61 cases, rate of 53.3 per 100,000 people. There is one known active case. The last case was reported Dec. 2.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 89 cases, rate of  68.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 91 cases. There are eight known active cases. The last cases were reported Dec. 9.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 116, rate of 139 per 100,000 people. The health unit has also reported a probable case. There are eight known active cases. The last confirmed case was reported Dec. 4. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 239 cases, rate of 120.1 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 242 cases. There are eight known active cases. The last case was reported Dec. 9.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 24 cases, rate of 73.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 21 cases. There are five known active cases. The last case was reported Dec. 9.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 133 cases, rate of 151.7 per 100,000 people. The health unit has also reported two probable cases. There are 10 known active cases. The last cases were reported Dec. 9.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 398 cases, rate of 265.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 400 cases. There are 118 known active cases. The last cases were reported Dec. 9.

The cumulative incidence rate for COVID-19 in Ontario is 906.7 cases per 100,000 people.
