Public Health Ontario has reported 3,128 new cases of COVID-19 today.
The province reported 51 deaths in today's update. Of those, 22 were residents of long-term care homes. One of the deaths reported today was an individual between 20 and 39 years old, four were individuals between 40 and 59 years old, 17 were between 60 and 79 years old, and 29 were over the age of 80.
Since yesterday, 91 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 16 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.
Today's two updates provided by the province's public health agency today also reported the following:
- 2,015 new recoveries
- 1,347 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,190 reported yesterday. This is the highest number of patients reported hospitalized with COVID during the pandemic. In the first wave, hospitalizations peaked at 1,043.
- There are 352 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 333 yesterday) and 245 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 194 yesterday).
- 25,840 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 24,778 reported yesterday
- The province reported 35,152 tests processed yesterday resulting in a 9.4 per cent positivity rate. The province's goal is three per cent.
- There is a backlog of 39,805 tests awaiting processing.
- Of the 3,128 cases reported today, 917 are from Toronto, 581 are from Peel, 389 are from York Region, and 54 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
- Based on case data reported today, the new cases include 450 people under 20, 1,140 people between 20 and 39 years old, 880 people between 40 and 59 years old, 456 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 203 people over the age of 80.
- There were 7,607 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered yesterday, which is up from 4,808 the day before. There have been 50,030 doses of the vaccines administered to date. The vaccine approved for use requires two doses given 21 days apart.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 197,360 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 166,790 recoveries and 4,730 deaths, of which 2,865 were individuals living in long-term care homes
The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,327.7 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 131.7 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, which is up by 26 per cent compared to Dec. 20-26 when the average weekly incidence rate was 104.5 cases per 100,000 people.

- Algoma Public Health — 92 confirmed cases since the pandemic began, with 28 confirmed active cases.
- North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 144 confirmed cases since the pandemic began, with 18 confirmed active cases.
- Porcupine Health Unit - 133 confirmed cases since the pandemic began, with five confirmed active cases.
- Public Health Sudbury & Districts - 288 confirmed cases since the pandemic began, with 23 confirmed active cases.
- Timiskaming Health Unit - 80 confirmed cases since the pandemic began, with 20 confirmed active cases.
- Northwestern Health Unit - 178 confirmed cases since the pandemic began, with 19 confirmed active cases.
- Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 615 confirmed cases since the pandemic began, with 60 confirmed active cases.
