Ontario COVID-19 cases continue to drop with 161 reported today

Ontario has reported 161 new cases of COVID-19 today, the lowest number of cases reported in a single day in nearly three months. 

The number of new cases has been steadily decreasing over the past three weeks with 2,297 new cases from May 31 to June 6, 1,491 new cases reported between June 7 and 13, and 1,309 cases reported last week. 

Today, Public Health Ontario also notes there are 214 more recoveries, bringing the overall number of active cases in the province down to 2,095 cases. 

There are currently 265 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, including 76 people in intensive care and 58 patients on ventilators. 

The province confirmed another three deaths related to the coronavirus today, all of them were people over the age of 80. 

The province has confirmed 33,637 cases of COVID-19 to-date, and has reported 28,933 recoveries (86 per cent of all cases), and 2,609 deaths (7.8 per cent of all cases). 

Of the total number of confirmed cases, Public Health Ontario reports 5,364 of them have been long-term care residents, and 1,654 of the people who have died were residents of long-term care homes. 

There were 21,900 tests processed since yesterday's provincial report. 

The average incidence rate in Ontario is 226.3 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people. 

There are 16  known active cases of the virus in Northern Ontario.

Today's provincial report includes data from Jan. 15 to June 21 and includes the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population. Data included on resolved cases is from each health unit's respective website. The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

• Algoma Public Health - 24 cases, rate of 21 per 100,000 population. There are 22 resolved cases, and two active ones.

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 28 cases, rate of 21.6 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 30 cases. Of those, 28 are resolved and there has been one death. There is one known active case.

• Porcupine Health Unit - 66, rate of 79.1 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 67 cases. Of the confirmed cases, 57 are resolved and eight people have died. There are two known active cases of the virus. 

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 66 cases, rate of 33.2 per 100,000 population. There are 64 resolved cases and two people have died.

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The last positive tests were done April 28. All of the cases are resolved.

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 87 cases, rate of 58 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 90 confirmed cases. There are 83 resolved cases and one person has died. There are six known active cases, three of which are hospitalized.

• Northwestern Health Unit - 30 cases, rate of 34.2  per 100,000 population. There are 25 resolved cases, and five active ones.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 226.3.
