Public Health Ontario has confirmed 166 new COVID-19 cases today, which is the highest daily increase this month. The province reported 165 new cases on July 3, and 257 new cases on June 29.
With 132 recoveries and two deaths also reported today, the number of active cases in Ontario rises slightly to 1,398 compared to 1,366 yesterday.
The two deaths reported today were individuals between the ages of 40 and 59.
Of the 166 cases reported today, 47 are from Toronto Public Health Unit and another 47 are from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. Ottawa Public Health also reported 19 new cases today and Peel Public Health reported 13 cases. The remainder of the health units in Ontario reported between zero and nine new cases today, according to the Ontario epidemiological report released this morning.
More than 50 per cent (89 cases) of today's reported cases are people between the ages of 20 and 39. There were 23 new cases reported in individuals over the age of 60.
The province has confirmed a total of 37,440 COVID cases since the start of the pandemic, with 33,294 now reported recovered (88.9 per cent) and 2,748 reported deaths.
Public Health Ontario has reported a total of 846 new coronavirus cases this week. Last week 938 new cases of COVID-19, which was the first week new cases dropped below 1,000 since March.
For the week of June 28 to July 4, the province reported 1,180 cases. The week before that (June 21-27) there were 1,175 new cases reported in Ontario. The biggest increase in a week was April 19-25 when there were 3,985 cases reported with a record 640 new cases reported on April 24.
There were 28,849 more COVID-19 tests processed since the last Ontario report, bringing the total number of tests completed in Ontario to 1,839,332.
There are now 105 people hospitalized with the virus, including 33 people in intensive care units and 22 patients on ventilators.
In Northeastern Ontario there are four known active cases.
The breakdown for the health units is:
• Algoma Public Health - 27 cases, rate of 23.6 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases.
• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 35 cases, rate of 27 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 37 cases. There are no known active cases.
• Porcupine Health Unit - 69, rate of 82.7 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases.
• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 67 cases, rate of 33.7 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 67 cases. There are no known active cases.
• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The last positive tests were done April 28. All of the cases are resolved.
The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 251.9.
