Number of COVID-19 cases in Ontario rises slightly

There are 136 confirmed new cases of COVID-19 today along with two additional deaths, according to provincial authorities

According to the province, there are 136 confirmed new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the total to 35,794 cases.

This represents an increase of 0.4 per cent since the last report. On Saturday, the province reported 121 new cases - one of the lowest totals in recent weeks.

Of the more than 35,000 cases reported to date, more females have contracted the virus. So far, 19,094 women have tested positive, while 16,419 males have tested positive according to Ontario statistics.

Two more people have died from the coronavirus since yesterday’s report, bringing the Ontario death count to 2,689.

Of the people who have died, 1,718 have been residents of long-term care homes. Seven people who work in long-term care homes have also died.

Across the province, there have been 35,794 cases of COVID-19 confirmed since the onset of the pandemic; 31,266 of those cases have been resolved. Since the July 4 report, 183 more cases have been resolved.

Today's provincial report includes data from Jan. 15 to July 2 and includes the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

Data included on resolved cases and last known confirmed is from each health unit's respective website. The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

• Algoma Public Health - 24 cases, rate of 21 per 100,000 population. All of the cases are resolved.

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 32 cases, rate of 24.7 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 31 cases. Of those, 29 are resolved and there has been one death. 

• Porcupine Health Unit - 67, rate of 80.3 per 100,000 population. Of the confirmed cases, 58 are resolved and eight people have died. There is one active case of the virus. The last positive test was June 21.

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 67 cases, rate of 33.7 per 100,000 population. There are 64 recoveries and two people have died. There is one known active case.

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The last positive tests were done April 28. All of the cases are resolved.

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 92 cases, rate of 61.3 per 100,000 population. There are 88 resolved cases and one person has died. There are three known active cases, including one in hospital.

• Northwestern Health Unit - 39 cases, rate of 44.5  per 100,000 population. There are 30 resolved cases and no deaths. There are nine known active cases.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 239.9.
