NEWS RELEASE
EXTENDICARE KAPUSKASING
*************************
As of 11 a.m. today, we have no new cases to report among our residents or staff.

We continue to have two residents with active cases of COVID-19 in our home, one of whom remains in hospital. All residents continue to isolate in their rooms, where they are being provided with meals and individual care and support.

We have now received all outstanding test results from our weekly staff testing clinic and all have come back negative. Working with the Porcupine Health Unit, we were also able to resolve eight more of our team members, meaning we only have one active case among our staff. All staff remain cohorted to a single area in the home to help prevent spread between home areas.

Ongoing outbreak defense

The home continues to meet daily with the Porcupine Health Unit, Sensenbrenner Hospital, Ontario Health, our Local Health Integration Network team and the Ministry of Long-Term Care. All parties are working together to respond to the outbreak and ensure enhanced levels of care.

The team from Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) remains onsite, continuing to focus on enhanced infection control and prevention practices, including active audits on appropriate environmental cleaning, Personal Protective Equipment and hand hygiene practices on all shifts.

Extendicare staff from our COVID operations unit will remain on site for the coming weeks to help with ongoing staff training, including audits of IPAC practices, working closely with the TADH team.

We continue to follow public health direction and operate under an abundance of caution to limit the spread of the virus.

Family connections

Over the course of the past weeks, the social worker we have added to our team has connected with the vast majority of our residents’ families and continues to be available to schedule phone or FaceTime calls with families who wish to virtually connect with their loved ones. We recognize this continues to an extremely challenging time for our community, and will continue to do everything we can to clear the virus from our home, keep families informed and support our staff.
