THUNDER BAY – Canada’s military will support the delivery of the COVID-19 vaccine in remote First Nations in northern Ontario, the federal government announced Sunday.

Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair announced via Twitter that the armed forces would support vaccine distribution in 32 Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities.

The deployment came at the request of the provincial government, he said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted about the plan later Sunday.

“Members of the Canadian Forces [will] provide logistical support, help with vaccination efforts, and work to keep people safe,” Trudeau wrote.

Plans to vaccinate 16,000 residents of remote First Nations by the end of April were announced earlier in January as part of Ontario's Operation Remote Immunity.
