Health unit reports 9th COVID-related death in Timmins area

A ninth death related to COVID-19 has been reported by the Porcupine Health Unit (PHU).

It is a man in his 70s who was admitted to Timmins and District Hospital who tested positive July 19. The case had previously been reported as resolved.

In a news release, PHU medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton said his death was related to complications of the COVID-19 infection. The death isn't related to an institutional outbreak.

“On behalf of the PHU, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends,” says Catton. 

This is the seventh death in Timmins related to the virus since the start of the pandemic, and the ninth in the health unit's region. The last death locally was reported June 13.

There are no new COVID-19 cases being reported today.

So far, there have been 73 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. Of those, 64 are resolved and nine people have died. There are no known active cases.
