Four new COVID-19 cases reported, outbreak declared in Cochrane

Four new COVID-19 cases are being reported in the Porcupine Health Unit region.

An outbreak of the virus has also been declared at the Villa Minto Long Term Care Home in Cochrane.

Two of the new cases are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson and Iroquois Falls. One of those is related to an institutional outbreak and the exposure of the other case is under investigation. 

The other two new cases are in the Hearst, Hornepayne area. The cause of one is under investigation and one case is linked to an institutional outbreak.

The outbreak at the Cochrane long term care home was declared after an asymptomatic person tested positive as part of the ongoing screening protocols.

"The staff at the long term care home are taking all the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID-19," reads the news release.

To date, there have been 314 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. Of those, 272 are recovered and 25 people have died. There are 15 known active cases.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne.
