Extendicare Timmins outbreak declared over, says health unit

Riopel says no connection between outbreaks at St. Mary's, Spruce Hill Lodge

The COVID-19 outbreak at Extendicare in Timmins has been declared over, according to the Porcupine Health Unit (PHU).

The long-term care facility was the first local seniors' residence to declare an outbreak of the virus after a staff member tested positive.

Two other outbreaks have since been announced. Two residents at Spruce Hill Lodge have tested positive, and a staff member at St. Mary's Gardens is a confirmed case.

“Through our investigation we’ve been able to determine that there is no connection between the outbreak at St. Mary’s Gardens and Spruce Hill Lodge,” said Chantal Riopel, PHU chief nursing officer, in today's daily health table update.

No new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the past 24 hours. 

There are currently 49 positive cases in the health unit's region.

As of yesterday, the health unit is aware of 1025 COVID-19 tests being done locally. Of the 49 positive cases, 30 are resolved and two people have died. There are 323 cases under investigation.

For the local cases, 27 are in Timmins and 17 of those are resolved, 21 are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls, and Smooth Rock Falls and 12 of those are resolved, and one is in the area of Kapuskasing, Opasatika, Val Rita-Harty, Moonbeam, and Fauquier-Strickland and is resolved.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing and Hornepayne. They are by appointment only and you must be referred by your primary healthcare provider or the health unit.
