Daily COVID-19 case increase lowest in three weeks for Ontario

The last time the province reported daily case increases in the 300s was early April

Ontario is reporting 347 new cases of COVID-19 today, which is the lowest daily increase in cases since April 6.

Recoveries continue to climb, now reaching 9,612, or 61.1 per cent of Ontario’s total cumulative cases. Ontario Public Health is reporting 648 recoveries since yesterday.

The province is also reporting another 45 deaths attributed to the virus, all of them residents at long-term care homes.

Daily testing remains steady between 10,000 and 12,000 tests per day. This morning’s report noted there were 11,554 tests completed in a day, and there are 9,530 still awaiting results. There have been 264,594 tests completed at Ontario labs.

In total, Ontario has confirmed 15,728 cases of COVID-19 and 996 deaths attributed to the virus.

There are now 977 people hospitalized with COVID-19, and 235 patients in intensive care units. There are 186 people on ventilators in the province.

The Ministry of Long-Term Care is reporting 159 current outbreaks in long-term care homes including 2,632 residents and 1,361 staff infected. The ministry states there have been 775 deaths of long-term care residents as a result of the virus. Ontario Public Health is reporting 521 deaths among long-term care residents, but their numbers typically lag behind the ministry’s.

There are now 34 long-term care outbreaks resolved.

Locally, there have been 59 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Porcupine Health Unit region. Of those, 43 hare resolved and four people have died.

The health unit announced the latest virus-related death last night. It was a man in his 80s who was identified in the investigation into the outbreak at Timmins and District Hospital.

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases, with 70. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population among other health units in Northern Ontario. The rate there is 69.5 per 100,000 people.

According to today's report, which includes data from Jan. 15 to April 28, the number of cases at other Northern Ontario health units, as well as the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population are:

• Algoma Public Health - 13 cases, rate of 11.4 per 100,000 population

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 14 cases, rate of 10.8 per 100,000 population

• Porcupine Health Unit - 58, rate of 69.5 per 100,000 population (59 cases actually been confirmed)

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 56 cases, rate of 28.1 per 100,000 population

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 12 cases, rate of 36.7 per 100,000

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 70 cases, rate of 46.7 per 100,000 population

• Northwestern Health Unit - 15 cases, rate of 17.1 per 100,000 population

According to the report, in Northeastern Ontario, there have been 153 confirmed cases, and the rate is 27.4 per 100,000 population. In Northwestern Ontario, there have been 85 cases and a rate of 35.8. The provincial rate per 100,000 population is 103.5.
