The Timiskaming Health Unit is reporting one new COVID-19 case linked to the outbreak at a Matachewan-area mine.
The 18th case for the Timiskaming Health Unit is in the Kirkland Lake area. The last time the health unit reported a case was early October.
According to the health unit, the person is a contact of a case and is self-isolating.
"Through contact tracing, Public Health will notify all close contacts directly. If you are not contacted by Public Health, you are not considered a close contact," reads the health unit update posted on Facebook.
This is the sixth case linked to the outbreak at Alamos Gold's Young-Davidson Mine near Matachewan. The previous five cases were not added to the Timiskaming numbers because the workers live outside the area.
"Investigation is ongoing and all cases are part of the same work group. All cases and contacts are followed by Public Health. THU has been working closely with mine management who are taking the necessary precautions," according to the health unit.
The health unit reported the outbreak at the mine Nov. 4. Last week, the company said the operations are running as usual.
For Timiskaming, there are assessment centres in the areas of Temiskaming Shores, Englehart, Kirkland Lake, and Temagami. Testing is by appointment only. The health unit's COVID-19 line phone number is 705-647-4305 ext. 7 or 1-866-747-4305 ext. 7. It is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 :30 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to noon.
