An annual ceremony celebrating the achievements of local residents has been cancelled for this year.

The 2021 Evening of Applause marking International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21 will not be held in 2021.

"It was decided that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and respecting all public health requirements; limiting public events of 50 people and ensuring social distancing requirements, this year’s event would be postponed to the 2021-2022 school year," reads the announcement from Timmins, together, the group of partners that organizes the event.

The annual event celebrates Students Who Make a Difference within their schools and honoured new additions to the Human Rights Wall of Fame that is sponsored by the City of Timmins and located in the main branch of the Timmins Public Library.

A proclamation for the International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination is still going ahead. It will be issued March 19 at City Hall.
