The Timmins Police station is restricting access to the public effective today.

While the Ontario-wide shutdown starts Dec. 26, Timmins Police limited access to the station on Spruce Street South as of noon today (Dec. 22).

"This measure is deemed necessary as part of the provincial mandate regarding lockdown protocols aimed towards enhanced containment of the COVID-19 virus," according to police.

People wanting to reach the station for police assistance, advice or guidance, or to report any matter other than a crime in progress should call 705-264-1201.

For urgent matters, call 911.

"Only those persons deemed to be in need of genuine access AND who meet the COVID-19  protocols will be allowed to enter the building," reads the news release.

"Persons who are legally required to attend the police station to provide their fingerprints, or have their photograph taken, or provide a DNA sample, in keeping with any court order or formal release document will be allowed in to complete these legally mandated tasks."

Police are working with the Collision Reporting Centre, which is located in the police station, to make sure its services remain available with "enhanced screening protocols imposed on those persons requiring this type of service."
