393 recoveries and 346 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario

Public Health Ontario is reporting 346 new cases of COVID-19 today.

The provincial agency’s daily report also includes 59 new deaths and 393 recoveries.

The most recent deaths include two people between the ages of 40-59, 13 people between the ages of 60 and 79, and 44 people over the age of 80.

There are now 1,016 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, including 203 patients in an intensive care unit and 158 patients on ventilators. Over the course of the pandemic, about 12.5 cases of the coronavirus reported in Ontario have been hospitalized.

There have been a total of 3,291 cases confirmed in health care workers over the course of the pandemic, which is about 16.5 per cent of the province’s cases.

Today’s report indicates there were 19,227 tests processed on Thursday, and there are another 15,307 in the queue. Ontario has now completed 416,376 tests.

Public Health Ontario has recorded 19,944 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province since the pandemic began. Of those, 14,383 people have recovered (72.1 per cent) and 1,599 people have died (8 per cent). Seventy per cent of the deaths in Ontario have been people aged 80 or over, and about 48 per cent of all the deaths reported by Public Health Ontario have been residents of long-term care homes.

The Ministry of Long-Term Care has reported there are now 175 outbreaks in long-term care facilities in Ontario, including 2,773 active cases of COVID-19 confirmed in residents and 1,736 in staff. The ministry has reported 1,187 deaths of residents attributed to the virus.

There have now been 64 confirmed cases of the virus in the Porcupine Health Unit area. Of those, 49 are resolved and five people have died.

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases, with 79. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population among other health units in Northern Ontario. The rate there is 76.7 per 100,000 people.

According to today's report, which includes data from Jan. 15 to May 8, the number of cases at other Northern Ontario health units, as well as the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population are:

• Algoma Public Health - 16 cases, rate of 14 per 100,000 population

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 17 cases, rate of 13.1 per 100,000 population

• Porcupine Health Unit - 64, rate of 76.7 per 100,000 population 

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 57 cases, rate of 28.6 per 100,000 population

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 79 cases, rate of 52.7 per 100,000 population

• Northwestern Health Unit - 15 cases, rate of 17.1 per 100,000 population

According to the report, in Northeastern Ontario, there have been 172 confirmed cases, and the rate is 30.8 per 100,000 population. In Northwestern Ontario, there have been 94 cases and a rate of 39.6. The provincial rate per 100,000 population is 134.2
