COCHRANE - An intimate partner violence call led to impaired driving charges and more, as well as police using a spike belt.

Around 11:30 p.m. yesterday (April 9), James Bay OPP responded to a domestic disturbance at a Fear Road residence in Fournier Township west of Cochrane.

Responding officers saw a vehicle speeding and being driven dangerously on Fear Road. Police followed the vehicle as it headed westbound on Highway 11 and a tire deflation device — also known as a spike belt — was used, however, the vehicle continued down the road. It was safely stopped by police in Calder Township.

The driver was arrested and police allege they had been drinking. They were brought to the Cochrane detachment for further testing.

A 46-year-old Cochrane resident, whose name isn't being released to protect the identity of the victim, is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Domestic Mischief

The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Cochrane in May. Their licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
