Man driving stolen vehicle charged with impaired: OPP

KAPUSKASING - A man driving a stolen vehicle was allegedly impaired and had suspected cocaine on him, says police.

Around 11 p.m. on April 27, James Bay OPP pulled over a vehicle that was seen swerving on Riverside Drive in Kapuskasing. 

When police spoke to the driver, they determined that the driver was impaired. The driver was arrested and during that process, police said suspected cocaine was found. It was also discovered that the vehicle was stolen and the driver's licence was suspended. 

A 48-year-old man from Hearst is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine
  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Take motor vehicle without consent
  • Operation while prohibited under the criminal code - two counts
  • Driving while under suspension (HTA)

The accused is in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Kapuskasing on May 13. 

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
