Woman accused of shoplifting, striking loss prevention officer at grocery store

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local person with theft related offences stemming from an incident that occurred on Sunday, Aug. 2 at an Algonquin Blvd grocery store.

Timmins Police Service officers responded to a call for service regarding a customer who had been observed concealing items on her person while in the store. A loss prevention officer with the grocery store confronted the female customer once she had exited the store without paying for the item. The suspect became assaultive towards the loss prevention officer by striking him a number of times.

The suspect was eventually subdued and taken into custody.

As a result of the incident, Marie Etherington, 50, of Timmins, has been charged with:

  • Theft under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of property obtained by crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Assault contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Etherington remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for this morning at Provincial Court in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against her.
