Two people have died and two others were sent to hospital in a fiery crash early Sunday morning involving transport trucks near Thunder Bay.

As of late Sunday, the TransCanada Highway remained closed as a police reconstruction team investigated the incident, which closed the east-west trucking route for more than 18 hours.

Police say at around 3:30 a.m. they responded to the collision involving two commercial motor vehicles on Highway 11-17 in the Township of Shabaqua, about an hour northwest of Thunder Bay.

Video from the scene showed at least one truck engulfed in flames.

Police said Sunday evening that two people have been pronounced dead while two others have been sent to hospital. Police did not give details on the extent of their injuries.

The highway remained closed as of about 10 p.m. Sunday.
