Two charged in relation to Kirkland Lake break and enter spree

Police say the accused are responsible for four area break-ins

KIRKLAND LAKE - On Jan. 21, 2021, a search warrant was executed at a residence on Kirkland Street in the Town if Kirkland Lake as part of an ongoing investigation by uniformed members and the Crime Unit of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the North East Region Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and with the assistance of the North East Region OPP Canine Unit (K9).

As a result, four break and enters have been solved, over $5,000 in stolen property has been recovered and two people have been arrested and charged.

Casey Swiergosz, 26 years of age from Kirkland Lake, has been charged with the following:
    •    Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (three counts), contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
    •    Break and enter dwelling house (two counts), contrary to section 348(1)(b) of the CC,
    •    Mischief under $5,000 (two counts), contrary to section 430(4) of the CC, and
    •    Personating a peace officer, contrary to section 130(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused was released on a Judicial Release Order and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake on Feb. 25, 2021.

Joseph Swiergosz, 53 years of age from Kirkland Lake, has been charged with the following:
    •    Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (three counts), contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC, and
    •    Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC.

The accused was released on an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake on Feb. 25, 2021.
