Two charged after driver failed to stop for police

Police say the accused also fled on foot

LEBEL TWP – On April 8, 2021, frontline members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting an investigation into an allegation of a person breaching their release conditions.

Police observed the accused in a motor vehicle that was travelling on Hwy 66 in Lebel Township and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, however the driver failed to stop for police. A short time later the vehicle was observed on a dead-end street in Lebel Twp. and the accused fled on foot.

The driver of the motor vehicle was arrested and taken into custody. The accused was located a short time later and was arrested without incident.

Ryan Carlson, 33 years-of-age, of Kirkland Lake, has been charged with the following: 

  • Failure to comply with release order, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC) (Three Counts).

The accused was released on a Judicial Release Order and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake on May 6, 2021.

Melissa Burnside, 36-years-of-age, of Kirkland Lake, has been charged with the following: 

  • Flight from peace officer, contrary to section 320.17 of the CC, and 
  • Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC.

The driver of the motor vehicle was released by way of an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear before The Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake on May 20, 2021.
