Traffic stop on Highway 11 near Cochrane leads to charges for two

Police say the driver and passenger attempted to switch places in the vehicle before police arrival

COCHRANE - On Aug. 20, 2021, members of the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop for a motor vehicle that was speeding on Highway 11, in Clute Township near Cochrane.

Further investigation revealed that the driver and the passenger attempted to obstruct police by switching places in the motor vehicle before police arrival. The driver of the vehicle was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages.

The passenger had a suspended driving licence.

As a result, the driver and the passenger were arrested, driver's licence suspended, and the vehicle was towed and impounded.

Claude Lanois, 52 years old of Mattice, was arrested and charged with:

  • Adult breach of conditional sentence order, contrary to section 742.6 of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the CC
  • Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court (three counts), contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Sept. 14, 2021 in Cochrane.

Steven Harvey, 38 years old of Orleans, was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1) (b) of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Sept. 7, 2021 in Cochrane.
