Traffic stop leads to charges for ATV driver in Kirkland Lake

Police say the 64-year-old was driving with a suspended license

KIRKLAND LAKE – On April 26, 2021, frontline members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) on Water Lane in the Town of Kirkland Lake for a Highway Traffic Act (HTA) violation.

Further investigation revealed that the driver's licence was under suspension for a Criminal Code (CC) offence and under the HTA.

As a result, William Simpson, 64 years of age, of Kirkland Lake, has been charged with the following; 

  • Operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the CC, 
  • Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the HTA, 
  • Drive motor vehicle - not equipped with Ignition Interlock Device, contrary to Ontario Regulation 287/08 - 11 of the HTA , and 
  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle, contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the HTA.

The vehicle was impounded for 45 days as part of the Vehicle Impoundment Program.

The accused was released on an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear for the Ontario Court of Justice on May 27, 2021, in Kirkland Lake.
