Traffic stop leads to arrest and drug charges for Hearst resident (3 photos)

Police say the motorcycle driver was stopped for travelling in a bicycle lane

On May 18, 2021 members of the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop with a motorcycle that was travelling in a bicycle lane.  

Further investigation revealed that the driver of the motorcycle was found to be a suspended driver.  

As a result, Stephane Godbout, 44-years-old, of Hearst, was arrested and charged with: 

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - methamphetamine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) 
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the purpose of trafficking - other drugs, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA 
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - other drugs, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA 
  • Failure to comply with undertaking, contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code 
  • Driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) 
  • Drive motor vehicle - no permit, contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the HTA 
  • Drive motor vehicle - improper licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the HTA 
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act    

The accused appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court on May 19, 2021 in Hearst.
