NEWS RELEASE

*************************
In keeping with the recent influx of evacuees from Pikangikum, the Timmins Police Service is issuing a Traffic Advisory in regards to current and anticipated increases in pedestrian traffic on Riverside Drive and Highway 101 in the west end of the city.

Given that no sidewalks are available in this area and the shoulder being narrow, motorists are asked to reduce their speed and take every precaution necessary to enhance the safety of pedestrians in these areas for the foreseeable next few weeks.

A large number of evacuees from Pikangikum are temporarily relocated at the Ramada Inn and some may opt to make use of the roadway shoulder to attend area retail outlets and restaurants in the immediate area.

Pedestrian safety, especially in regards to younger children in the area, is and remains a top priority for these guests in our city.

The benefits of being vigilant and patient behind the wheel in terms of enhancing pedestrian safety should be obvious.

This issue will be a particular imperative during nighttime and low light times of day.

The cooperation of the motoring public is appreciated in regards to this temporary situation.
